Private investigative services in southern California and other parts of the world are designed to solve real-world issues and help people get to the bottom of situations that are affecting their lives. Every once in a while, however, a private investigator is involved in a case that seems to come straight from the mind of a creative fiction writer. This is exactly what happened in a recent case in New York State involving a state Assemblyman and a private investigator.
According to Ken Lovett at the New York Daily News, Assemblyman Edward Hennessey had his car bugged by a private investigator hired by a Republican campaign organization in New York State. The controversy began back in March, when an attorney employed by the Assembly Republican Campaign Committee hired a private investigator to use the tracker on Hennessey’s vehicle.
Allegedly, this tracker was intended to determine whether or not Hennessey actually lived in Suffolk County, where he was elected. Dean Murray, Hennessey’s opponent in the 2012 state elections, filed a lawsuit to prove that Hennessey did not live in Suffolk County, but a judge threw the suit out in August. Now, New York State Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle is demanding an apology from Republican officials in New York and asking them to come clean about whether or not other legislators in the state have been bugged.
Why Was A Private Investigator Hired By The New York GOP?
As sinister and unbecoming as this kind of tactic may be, in the state of New York, it is a legal one – as long as a vehicle is not broken into and the tracking device is not installed on private property. However, this is not the case in California: residents here must have consent from a vehicle’s owner in order to place a tracking device on a vehicle.
Despite this law, an article published in Slate details the willingness of some unethical private investigators to engage in these types of practices. Journalist Ryan Gallagher posed as a suspicious wife and wrote letters of inquiry to several private investigators asking about GPS tracking services. Some of these private investigators in Irvine even offered to provide these services for Gallagher.
What A Legitimate Private Investigator Can Do
Regardless of what reasons you may have for hiring a private investigator, it is important that you hire one that is licensed, experienced, and ethical. These private investigators are very familiar with the law and know exactly what they can and cannot do in the course of their investigations. Not only could hiring an unethical private investigator get you into legal trouble, it is likely that any evidence they gather for you using illegal tactics would be thrown out of court anyway.
Here are some legitimate ways that a private investigator in southern California can help you:
- Surveillance Services: A dependable private investigator understands how to legally keep an eye on a person of interest and provide you with evidence that gives you conclusive information about what they have been doing.
- A Complete Background Check: Legitimate private investigators conduct background checks using legal channels to give clients information about someone’s past.
- Witness Interviews: A quality private investigator will use low-pressure techniques to conduct a legal interview that helps clients get information.
Even if you are not tracking someone as important as a state legislator, you need to hire a reputable private investigator that can give you legal, ethical services to help you find answers about important issues in your life.
